Rise and Shout!

Went to the game on Saturday. Another nail-bitter of a victory for BYU against Utah. After the last play of the game, Kyra, Cody and I ran onto the field (with hundreds of other fans) and congratulated the players. We lost Cody right away but somehow he got back to us amidst the multitude. We saw Harvey Unga, Austin Collie and Max Hall in the mix. I even patted Cecil O. Samuelson on the back and gave head coach Bronco Mendenhall a congratulatory back rub as he was leaving the field! It was funny to see President Samuelson sing the Cougar fight song, since he is technically a Ute.

Keyless Intrigue

As a rule, I try not to blog about the banalities of everyday life but I had two relatedly banal experiences that--if my math is right--add up to at least one funny one. For you math majors out there, the equation works out like this:

B1 + B2 = -B

So, today after class, I head out to the immense law school parking lot and find my car, a green 1997 Buick Century, where I had parked it this morning. I hit the unlock button on my keyless entry. The horn doesn't honk and the door doesn't unlock. What the heck, right? So I push the unlock button a couple more times. Same result. Utterly confused, my body--seemingly on its own--bends down and peers into the car. A baby's car seat. (For those of you who don't know me too well, I don't have children.) I turn and look toward the next row of cars and see my green 1997 Buick Century.

No big deal, right? Happens all the time. Well, it wouldn't have been so bad if it had not been for my other keyless entry foible from earlier this morning.

After working out at the gym, I get home, get out of my car and lock my car with my keyless entry keypad. Apparently over-exhausted from my workout, I proceed to the front door of the house and press the unlock button to unlock it. It took me a full 5 seconds and 2 honks from my car to realize that the door wasn't going to unlock itself.

Gallo Pinto

When I lived in Costa Rica as and exchange student, I ate a dish called "gallo pinto" (meaning "spotted rooster") almost every day. And I never got sick of it. More recently, Kyra and I took a vacation to Costa Rica (need to post pictures of that vacation) and I was reminded about how good this dish is. I emailed my host mom Sonia and asked her for the recipe. It's surprisingly easy to make. But you do have to have one secret ingredient to give it the Costa Rican touch. (Hint: the secret ingredient will be apparent to astute observers.) Below are some pics. Let me know if you want the recipe.

FYI: that's not beer in the picture; it's Inca Kola. It was truly a meal of the Americas.

Yummy!

More Halloween Shenanigans

Take a look at our pumpkins this year. As you can see from this first picture (thanks to Cody for labeling it so hauntingly!), I carved a haunted house with a moon and clouds, Kyra carved a scary zombie, and Cody carved a ghoul in a graveyard.

Here are some shots with me, my pumpkin and one of our cats, Pipi. Being that she is a black cat and her name is short for the Italian word for bat (pipistrello), Halloween is really Pipi's time to shine but she definitely looks like she's not in the Halloween mood in these pictures. Maybe it's because I was trying to point to my pumpkin and thus inadvertently put her in a sleeper hold. (Hey Liggett kids, remember this taunt: "Sleeper hold, sleeper hold, no one gets out of the sleeper hold.")

Here's beautiful Kyra showing off her beautiful pumpkin.

Here is Cody and pumpkin. I think he was a skeleton for Halloween.
